Festival and Conference on Poetry 2012
July 15 - 21, 2012

Festival Group

Faculty member Blas Falconer with students

Spend a week at "intensive poetry camp" with writers who are deeply committed to learning more about the craft of writing poetry. Now in its thirty-third year, the Festival and Conference on Poetry is a daily immersion in listening, reflection, and conversation about the writing and reading of poetry.

Here is what you can expect each day: a faculty-given discussion class or talk on an aspect of craft; a three-hour workshop for all participants; a period of silence for reading poetry; time to generate and revise poems. Each night, we'll carpool to the The Frost Place for readings in the Henry Holt Barn by faculty and guests. On the last night, the participants will read. Social gatherings, impromptu late-night readings if you are so inclined, great food, and a warm community spirit. We'll live and write and think and talk poetry under one roof -- poetry and faculty -- commuters are welcome, too!

Each faculty member is a seasoned writer and teacher who is committed to making the week successful for you. We will pay careful attention to each participant's goals (see directions for writing a cover letter on the application form) when matching participants to workshop leader. There will be time during the week to get to know all of the faculty -- in classes, at meals, readings, and get-togethers. Please click here for faculty bios.

The Week's Main Focus:

How a poem is made. We will look at syntax, diction, structure, pacing, tone, narrative development and other poetic elements to see just how writers manage their material. It's as simple, and as complex, as that. In so doing, we're going to immerse ourselves in poetry for the entire week.

If you want to spend a portion of July writing, revising, reading, learning, and having a wonderful time with other writers, please join us!

We welcome poets of all levels and a wide range of ages. A willingness to be a generous part of the community is what counts.

How to Apply

Please click here for PDF application form. Fill it out, save it, print it, and mail it in with all application materials. Please send four(4) pages of poetry (double-spaced, one side of the page). We will not respond to these poems nor bring them with us to Franconia. These poems do not need to be the poems you wish to have workshop'd, but they may be, if desired. They are for the application only.

Please include a one-page cover letter and indicate what your goals for the week are. This statement will help us to place you in an appropriate workshop for the week. We would prefer to make this decision for you, based on your work and our pedagogical sense of what would be best for you at this point in time. You may indicate in your letter up to two choices for workshop, knowing that we may place you in another group. Please include your contact information. Email contact is required as well.

Applications postmarked through June 15, 2012 will be considered. Applicants will be notified by email within two weeks whether they are accepted.

Participant information will be sent with acceptance letter and invoice.
